Morehead State Rifle Battles With Ohio State Buckeyes This Past Weekend

Morehead, Ky. – The Morehead State rifle team was in action this past Saturday as they hosted the Ohio State Buckeyes. Ohio State won the overall match firing an aggregate score of 4577, MSU’s gold team took second overall with a final score of 4562 and MSU’s blue team fired a 4285. Morehead State’s gold team defeated the Buckeye’s in the smallbore event with a score of 2270 which was four points higher than Ohio State’s 2266. Ohio State won the air rifle shooting a score of 2311 and MSU’s gold team shot a 2292 which was good for second and MSU’s blue team fired a 2157 for third place.

The Eagles had four shooters place in the top six of the smallbore event. Elizabeth Lyon took second place with a 574 and Kevin Mulligan took fourth with a score of 568. Shawn Holley and Rob Gagliani tied for fifth place both firing a 564. Ohio State’s Amanda Furrer won the event with a score of 583.

Lyon won the air rifle event after she fired a 586. Other notable finishers in the air rifle were Holley and Mulligan placing sixth and seventh respectively.

On Nov. 15 the Morehead State rifle team will travel to Lexington, Va., to battle the Virginia Military Institute Keydets. The match begins at 8 a.m.

Women's Tennis
Junior women's tennis player Brooke Helms went undefeated in singles action over the weekend, as she tallied two individual match wins. 

Helms clinched the come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Big East power West Virginia, a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 at number five singles.  Helms then was only one of two Eagle netters to score a win in a 5-2 loss at Duquesne , winning 6-3, 6-4 at number five.

Men's Basketball
Men's Basketball senior Ty Proffitt recorded a team-high 18 points on 5-of-6 from the field, 4-of-5 from three-point range and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line in Tuesday’s 75-69 victory over Norfolk State. 

He then registered a season-best 20 points on 6-of-10 from the floor, 4-of-7 from long range and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe in Saturday’s 56-50 win over Tennessee Tech. 

The guard, who hails from London, Ky., connected on 69 percent from the field (11-of-16) and 67 percent from downtown (8-of-12) in addition to making all eight free-throw attempts.  He also committed just four turnovers in 65 minutes last week.

Proffitt was also named Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week for his performances this past week.
