MSU Rifle Team Battles Close With Murray State and Jacksonville State

Morehead, Ky. – The Morehead State Rifle team battled Murray State and Jacksonville State this past weekend in a two match home stand. Morehead State fielded two teams, but ultimately was defeated in both matches. On Saturday MSU’s gold team fired a 4490 and MSU’s blue team shot a 4308, both weren’t enough to overcome Murray State’s score of 4552. On Sunday Jacksonville State fired a 4542 to win the match, MSU’s gold team fired a 4496 for second place and MSU’s blue team shot a 4314, good for third.

Individually for the Eagles Kevin Mulligan took third place in the smallbore firing a 568 and Elizabeth Lyon took fifth place after shooting a 565. Murray State’s Emily Quinon took first in the smallbore when she fired a 578. In the air rifle top finishers for the Eagles were Elizabeth Lyon and Nicole Heitmeyer who took sixth and seventh place.

On Sunday, Elizabeth Lyon, Rob Gagliani, and Kevin Mulligan finished in the top five in the smallbore event. Lyon finished in second, firing a 571, Gagliani shot a 562 which was good for third place and Mulligan took fifth with a 556. Jacksonville State’s Brian Carstensen won the event with a 584 and he also shot a 585 to win the air rifle. Elizabeth Lyon was MSU’s top shooter, firing a 571 which was good for fifth place.

The Morehead State rifle team is back in action at home on November 7 against Ohio State University. The match time begins at 8 a.m.

Women's Tennis
Junior women's tennis player Brooke Helms went undefeated in singles action over the weekend, as she tallied two individual match wins. 

Helms clinched the come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Big East power West Virginia, a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 at number five singles.  Helms then was only one of two Eagle netters to score a win in a 5-2 loss at Duquesne , winning 6-3, 6-4 at number five.

Men's Basketball senior Ty Proffitt recorded a team-high 18 points on 5-of-6 from the field, 4-of-5 from three-point range and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line in Tuesday’s 75-69 victory over Norfolk State. 

He then registered a season-best 20 points on 6-of-10 from the floor, 4-of-7 from long range and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe in Saturday’s 56-50 win over Tennessee Tech. 

The guard, who hails from London, Ky., connected on 69 percent from the field (11-of-16) and 67 percent from downtown (8-of-12) in addition to making all eight free-throw attempts.  He also committed just four turnovers in 65 minutes last week.

Proffitt was also named Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week for his performances this past week.
