Morehead State Rifle Team Conquers VMI

Lexington, Va. – The Morehead State rifle team traveled to Lexington, Va., this past Sunday and conquered the VMI Keydets. MSU fielded two teams and VMI fielded three teams. MSU’s gold team fired an aggregate score of 4553 to breeze past the rest of the competition get the overall victory. The MSU blue team shot an aggregate score of 4256 to take second place. VMI’s trio of teams shot aggregate scores of 4196, 4117, and 3960 respectively.

In the smallbore match, Morehead State totally dominated individually. The top six finishers were all Eagles. The top Eagles were Kevin Mulligan who fired a score of 572 which was good for first place. Elizabeth Lyon finished second with a score of 571 and Shawn Holley shot a score of 568 to finish third. In fourth and fifth place were Rob Gagliani and Justin Egan. Gagliani fired a 564 and Egan shot a 548. Nicole Heitmeyer shot just one behind Egan with a 547 to take sixth place. The best finisher for VMI was Joshua Gilliland who fired a 539 which was good for seventh place.

The Eagles continued their dominance in the air rifle event as well. MSU had the top seven finishers in this part of the match. Lyon registered a score of 578 to take first place and Kathleen Bush earned a score of 572 to take second place. Holley took third place with a score of 566. Gagliani and Mulligan finished in fourth and fifth, but were separated by only one point. Gagliani fired a 563 and Mulligan shot a 562. In sixth place was Hietmeyer with a 552 and in seventh place was Garrett Plooy who shot a 542.

The MSU rifle team has concluded the fall portion of it’s schedule and will be in action again on January 23, 2010 at home in a tri-match against Rose Hulman and VMI.

Men's Basketball
Men's Basketball senior Ty Proffitt recorded a team-high 18 points on 5-of-6 from the field, 4-of-5 from three-point range and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line in Tuesday’s 75-69 victory over Norfolk State. 

He then registered a season-best 20 points on 6-of-10 from the floor, 4-of-7 from long range and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe in Saturday’s 56-50 win over Tennessee Tech. 

The guard, who hails from London, Ky., connected on 69 percent from the field (11-of-16) and 67 percent from downtown (8-of-12) in addition to making all eight free-throw attempts.  He also committed just four turnovers in 65 minutes last week.

Proffitt was also named Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week for his performances this past week.

Women's Tennis
Junior women's tennis player Brooke Helms went undefeated in singles action over the weekend, as she tallied two individual match wins. 

Helms clinched the come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Big East power West Virginia, a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 at number five singles.  Helms then was only one of two Eagle netters to score a win in a 5-2 loss at Duquesne , winning 6-3, 6-4 at number five.
