MSU Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams to Race in NCAA Southeast Regional Championship

Morehead, Ky. – The Morehead State men’s and women’s cross country teams will compete in the NCAA Southeast Regional Championship this Saturday Nov. 14. The race is hosted by the University of Louisville and will take place in Louisville, Ky., at “Tom” Sawyer Park.

The event will begin at 10 a.m. ET, with the men's 10,000-meter race which features five nationally ranked teams, including no. 8 and defending Southeast Region champion College of William and Mary, no. 16 North Carolina State, no. 19 Virginia, no. 24 Louisville and no. 30 Duke. The women's 6,000-meter race will follow at 11:15 a.m. and will tout a pair of top 30 teams in no. 15 Duke and no. 19 and reigning regional champion Virginia. Other teams from the Ohio Valley Conference that will be competing in this regional will be Eastern Kentucky and Murray State.

The MSU men’s cross country team finished in sixth place at the OVC Championships two weekend’s ago. James Bowens led the Eagle men with an 11th place finish, which earned him second team All-OVC honors. Other Eagles who will look to do well will be Josh Wakeman and Matt Dotson.

The MSU women’s cross country team also finished in sixth place this year at the OVC Championships. Senior Alexis King as led the Eagle women in four out of the five meets they have run thus far this season, King finished 21st at the OVC championship. Ruth Millard has also done well for the Eagle women this year and will look to push King for leading the Eagles this Saturday.

The top two teams and four individuals in each race will earn automatic bids to the 2009 NCAA Championships on Nov. 23 in Terre Haute, Ind.

Women's Tennis
Junior women's tennis player Brooke Helms went undefeated in singles action over the weekend, as she tallied two individual match wins. 

Helms clinched the come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Big East power West Virginia, a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 at number five singles.  Helms then was only one of two Eagle netters to score a win in a 5-2 loss at Duquesne , winning 6-3, 6-4 at number five.

Men's Basketball
Men's Basketball senior Ty Proffitt recorded a team-high 18 points on 5-of-6 from the field, 4-of-5 from three-point range and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line in Tuesday’s 75-69 victory over Norfolk State. 

He then registered a season-best 20 points on 6-of-10 from the floor, 4-of-7 from long range and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe in Saturday’s 56-50 win over Tennessee Tech. 

The guard, who hails from London, Ky., connected on 69 percent from the field (11-of-16) and 67 percent from downtown (8-of-12) in addition to making all eight free-throw attempts.  He also committed just four turnovers in 65 minutes last week.

Proffitt was also named Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week for his performances this past week.
