Tennis Teams Sweep Cumberlands Invitational

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - The Morehead State men's and women's tennis teams each swept their respective flights this past weekend at the University of the Cumberlands Invitational.

In men's singles action Bradley Bryan defeated Campbellsville University's Pablo Numbela 6-7, 7-5 (10-8) and then knocked off  Numbela's teammate, Higor Silva 6-4, 6-4 to win numbers one singles. At number two, Dusan Milovanovic took down Carson-Newman's Trent Slager 6-3, 6-4 to open the day and then won the number two singles event with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph against Oscar Pantjola of Cumberlands.

MSU also won the third flight singles as Nathan Martin cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory in the opening round and then defeated Campbellsville's Zac Malyon 6-1, 6-2.

MSU won the numbers one and two doubles competition as well.

In women's play, at number one, Madeleinne Antero moved on by default and then won a 6-1, 6-2 contest over Kelcey Bauer of UC. At number two, freshman Kayla Tuscany defeated Carson-Newman's Kylie Elliott 6-0, 6-4 and then cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 win in the title match UC's Donna Strong.

Number three saw Alexandra Rydberg win 6-1, 6-0 to open and then win 6-2, 6-1 over CN athlete Taryn Cappodonna. At number four, Lauren Delaney also won twice (6-1, 6-2 and 6-0, 6-2), while at number five freshman Brook Helms swept her matches (6-2, 6-1, 6-1, 6-0).

Catherine Butts never lost a point in winning at number seven, 6-0, 6-0 and again 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles, Antero and Rydberg won 8-4 and then 8-1, while Delaney and Alix Lakow posted two 8-3 wins. To round it out, Helms and Tuscany won 8-0 and then 8-1.

Women's Tennis
Junior women's tennis player Brooke Helms went undefeated in singles action over the weekend, as she tallied two individual match wins. 

Helms clinched the come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Big East power West Virginia, a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 at number five singles.  Helms then was only one of two Eagle netters to score a win in a 5-2 loss at Duquesne , winning 6-3, 6-4 at number five.

Men's Basketball senior Ty Proffitt recorded a team-high 18 points on 5-of-6 from the field, 4-of-5 from three-point range and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line in Tuesday’s 75-69 victory over Norfolk State. 

He then registered a season-best 20 points on 6-of-10 from the floor, 4-of-7 from long range and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe in Saturday’s 56-50 win over Tennessee Tech. 

The guard, who hails from London, Ky., connected on 69 percent from the field (11-of-16) and 67 percent from downtown (8-of-12) in addition to making all eight free-throw attempts.  He also committed just four turnovers in 65 minutes last week.

Proffitt was also named Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week for his performances this past week.
