Men's and Women's Cross Country Both Finish in Sixth Place at OVC Championships

Nashville, Tenn. – The Morehead State men’s and women’s cross country teams raced in the Ohio Valley Conference Championships today at Vaughn’s Gap located in Edwin Warner Park in Nashville, Tenn. The men’s team took sixth place out of ten teams. The men were led by James Bowens who crossed the tape in 11th place in a time of 26:54.17, with this time he was awarded second team all-conference honors. The women finished in sixth out of ten as well, and were led by senior Alexis King who finished in 21st place with a time of 21:11.05.

“The conditions were horrible today, it had rained all night and the course was very muddy.” said Head Coach Tommy Barksdale. “There wasn’t any fast times run today, but we had some individuals do some great things, as a team we can do better, but it was just one of those days.”

Josh Wakeman and Michael Settles also finished in the top 30 for the Eagles. Wakeman finished in 18th place with a time of 27:25.73 and Settles crossed the line in a time of 27:57.22 which was good for a 30th place finish. Brian Knight finished in 43rd place, clocking in with a time of 29:09.39 and Jeffrey Covington ran a time of 29:36.06. Rounding it out for the Eagle men was Patrick Fouch who crossed the tape in 31:55.74.

Ruth Millard finished in 30th place today for the women with a time of 21:38.80. Elizabeth Braunwart, Natalie Norman, and Holly Mandzak all finished within four spots of each other. Braunwart finished in 39th, crossing the line with a time of 22:06.09. Norman finished right behind Braunwart in 40th place with a time of 22:14.01. Finishing in 42nd place was Mandzak who clocked a time of 22:19.69. Rounding it out for the Eagle women was Kate Bomar who crossed the line with a time of 23:01.60.

Eastern Kentucky won both the men’s and women’s championships. On the men’s side EKU recorded 22 points to win the event, placing second and third was Eastern Illinois and SEMO who had 89 and 98 points respectively. On the women’s side EKU won with 32 points, finishing in second place was Murray State with 63 points and right behind in third place was Eastern Illinois with 65 points.

The men’s and women’s cross country teams will be back in action on November 14 at the NCAA Regional meet in Louisville, Ky.
