Meisner, Birchmeier Named Academic All-District

MOREHEAD, Ky. – Morehead State junior goalkeeper Lily Meisner and sophomore forward Jillian Birchmeier have been named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Third Team Academic All-District IV for their accomplishments both on the field and in the classroom.

Meisner has been a mainstay in net this season for the Eagles, starting every game in goal and going the distance in all but one. She has recorded 68 saves and five shutouts on the season. She has been named Ohio Valley Conference Goalkeeper of the Week twice. The Taos, N.M. native holds an outstanding 4.00 gpa.

Birchmeier is tied for the team lead with five goals on the season. She has also added one assist in helping MSU claim its first regular season OVC crown in program history. The Findlay, Ohio native also holds a remarkable 4.00 gpa in the classroom.

To be eligible for academic all-district consideration, a student-athlete must be a starter or significant reserve and hold a 3.3 or better cumulative grade point average.

Meisner, Birchmeier and the rest of the OVC champion Eagles will be back in action next weekend has MSU hosts the OVC soccer tournament at Jayne Stadium. The Eagles will begin their OVC tournament title defense on Friday evening at 5 p.m. and will play the winner of the first round game between the four and five seeds. Seeds will be determined after the completion of regular season play this weekend.

Ty Proffitt
Men's Basketball
Men's Basketball senior Ty Proffitt recorded a team-high 18 points on 5-of-6 from the field, 4-of-5 from three-point range and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line in Tuesday’s 75-69 victory over Norfolk State. 

He then registered a season-best 20 points on 6-of-10 from the floor, 4-of-7 from long range and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe in Saturday’s 56-50 win over Tennessee Tech. 

The guard, who hails from London, Ky., connected on 69 percent from the field (11-of-16) and 67 percent from downtown (8-of-12) in addition to making all eight free-throw attempts.  He also committed just four turnovers in 65 minutes last week.

Proffitt was also named Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week for his performances this past week.

Women's Tennis
Junior women's tennis player Brooke Helms went undefeated in singles action over the weekend, as she tallied two individual match wins. 

Helms clinched the come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Big East power West Virginia, a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 at number five singles.  Helms then was only one of two Eagle netters to score a win in a 5-2 loss at Duquesne , winning 6-3, 6-4 at number five.
