MSU Rifle Team Spilts Matches This Past Weekend

Morehead, Ky. – The Morehead State rifle team traveled to UT Martin on Saturday and then battled Tennessee Tech on Sunday.

On Saturday the Eagles fell to the Skyhawks, firing an aggregate score of 4477 compared with UT Martin’s score of 4519. Top individual in the match for MSU was Elizabeth Lyon who fired a 576 in the Air Rifle to take first in the event. UT Martin’s Rob Burrows shot a 573 which was good for second place. Lyon also did well in the smallbore; she shot a 567 which was good for third place.

On Sunday the Eagles fielded two teams against the Golden Eagles of Tennessee Tech. Morehead State took the victory while firing an aggregate score of 4515, just edging the Golden Eagles who fired a 4511. Morehead State’s blue team took third at the match with a 4348.

In the smallbore part of the competition MSU had four Eagles place in the top five. The Eagles were led by Kevin Mulligan who took first with a 571 and Nicole Heitmeyer who took second with a 565. Fourth and fifth place went to MSU’s Elizabeth Lyon and Shawn Holley who fired a 563 and a 560 respectively.

In the air rifle notable finishers where Elizabeth Lyon who took second place with a 582 and Kevin Mulligan who fired a 573 which was good for fourth place.

The Eagles are at home this Halloween weekend, first Saturday Oct. 31 against Murray State and then again on Sunday November 1 against Jacksonville State.

Men's Basketball
Men's Basketball senior Ty Proffitt recorded a team-high 18 points on 5-of-6 from the field, 4-of-5 from three-point range and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line in Tuesday’s 75-69 victory over Norfolk State. 

He then registered a season-best 20 points on 6-of-10 from the floor, 4-of-7 from long range and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe in Saturday’s 56-50 win over Tennessee Tech. 

The guard, who hails from London, Ky., connected on 69 percent from the field (11-of-16) and 67 percent from downtown (8-of-12) in addition to making all eight free-throw attempts.  He also committed just four turnovers in 65 minutes last week.

Proffitt was also named Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week for his performances this past week.

Women's Tennis
Junior women's tennis player Brooke Helms went undefeated in singles action over the weekend, as she tallied two individual match wins. 

Helms clinched the come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Big East power West Virginia, a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 at number five singles.  Helms then was only one of two Eagle netters to score a win in a 5-2 loss at Duquesne , winning 6-3, 6-4 at number five.
