Women's Basketball Picked to Win OVC; Bozeman Tabbed Preseason Player of the Year

MOREHEAD, Ky. - Morehead State's women's basketball program has been picked to win the Ohio Valley Conference in 2009-10 in a vote by the league's head coaches and media relations contacts. Junior guard Chynna Bozeman was named Preseason Player of the Year, and senior guard Tiffany Hamilton was also named on the Preseason All-Conference Team.

In a race that's predicted to be close the Eagles earned 147 points, including nine first-place votes, while Austin Peay claimed six first-place votes and 146 points for second place. Tennessee State was third and Eastern Illinois came in fourth.

Head coach Mike Bradbury's sqaud finished 17-14 last year and 11-7 in the league for fourth place. The Eagles return four starters and 10 letterwinners. The 17 wins were the fifth highest in school history.

Bozeman led all OVC players with a school-record tying 95 three-pointers last year. She also ranked among the league's top five scorers at 15.9 points per game and ranked among league leaders in steals and assists as well. She is on track to surpass 1,000 career points sometime this season.

Hamilton also ranked among the league leaders in three pointers, making 2.1 per game. She averaged in double figures and ranked among the league;s best in free throw accuracy.

The Eagles open the season on Oct. 31 with an exhibition game against Kentucky State at 5 p.m.

Men's Basketball senior Ty Proffitt recorded a team-high 18 points on 5-of-6 from the field, 4-of-5 from three-point range and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line in Tuesday’s 75-69 victory over Norfolk State. 

He then registered a season-best 20 points on 6-of-10 from the floor, 4-of-7 from long range and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe in Saturday’s 56-50 win over Tennessee Tech. 

The guard, who hails from London, Ky., connected on 69 percent from the field (11-of-16) and 67 percent from downtown (8-of-12) in addition to making all eight free-throw attempts.  He also committed just four turnovers in 65 minutes last week.

Proffitt was also named Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week for his performances this past week.

Junior women's tennis player Brooke Helms went undefeated in singles action over the weekend, as she tallied two individual match wins. 

Helms clinched the come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Big East power West Virginia, a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 at number five singles.  Helms then was only one of two Eagle netters to score a win in a 5-2 loss at Duquesne , winning 6-3, 6-4 at number five.
