Eagles Claim Crucial 2-1 Victory over Murray State

Erin Adams scored just before halftime and Brittany Kiracofe netted her first goal of the season, while also adding an assist has the Morehead State soccer team defeated the Murray State Racers in a crucial Ohio Valley Conference matchup Friday afternoon in Murray.

The Eagles (6-6-3, 3-0-2) entered the contest trailing the Racers (5-7-1, 3-2-0) by one point and in fourth place in the OVC standings but picked up three huge points with the victory to leapfrog Murray State in the standings. Morehead State now has 11 points on the season while the Racers remain with nine points.

Kiracofe opened the scoring in the 10th minute when she banged home a volley of a corner kick from six yards out. It was the sophomore defender’s first goal of the season. Bethany Davidson was credited with her second assist of the season for delivering the corner kick.

Murray State was able to level the match in the 37th minute. The Racer’s Nicole Evans beat Eagle goalkeeper Lily Meisner for her fifth goal of the season. Sophie Hargreaves earned an assist on the game-tying score.

Adams put Morehead State back in front for good when she found the back of the net just before half time. It was Adams’s second goal of the season and her second game-winner. Kiracofe recorded an assist on the 45th minute goal, giving the Ottawa, Ohio native a career high three points for the game.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the second half, as the Eagles fired 10 shots in the half and the Racers tallied nine. For the game, each team fired 14 shots. Six Eagle shots were on net, while four Racer shots reached the goal.

Meisner tallied three saves in the contest, while Murray State’s Katie Walsh recorded four stops.

There will be little rest for the Eagles as they face another crucial OVC match Sunday when they face UT Martin. The Skyhawks also sat one point ahead of Morehead State in the OVC standings entering the weekend. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. in Martin.
