- Football Eagles Begin Spring Practice
Coach Matt Ballard's Eagles finished third in the PFL behind Mid-Major national champion Dayton and San Diego, both of whom had 6-1 league records. MSU handed Dayton its only loss of the season. Practices are scheduled on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday the first week of drills, then Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday for the remaining three weeks. On both offense and defense, MSU returns six starters. Returning on offense are guard Jacob Nail (Jr., Louisville, Ky.), center Nick Schoenfeld (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio), tackle Chris Setters (Sr., Fairborn, Ohio), wide receiver Nick Feldman (Sr., Oconto, Wis.) and halfbacks Erick Fitzpatrick (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) and Jerrod Pendleton (Jr., Lucasville, Ohio). Defensively, the returning starters are tackles Derick Steiner (Jr., Mason, Ohio) and Andrew Wilhoite (So., Frankfort, Ky.), linebacker Wes McDermott (Jr., Louisville, Ky.) and cornerbacks David Hyland (Sr., Woodstock, Ga.) and Henry Hudson (Jr., Winchester, Ky.). Three-year starter Brian Yost vacates the quarterback spot. Last year's back-up, Evan Sawyer (So., Dayton, Ohio), is the leading candidate to replace Yost entering spring practice. Jared Phillips (So., Hamilton, Ohio), who saw action at halfback in 2007, and red-shirt Blake Ayers (Fr., Bowling Green, Ky.) figure to make it a spirited battle. Drew Morgan (Jr., Walton, Ky.), who saw extensive action at halfback before being injured last season, will move to fullback. "While filling the starting quarterback spot may be the most obvious need, we've got to replace two key starters and identify depth on the offensive line," said MSU Offensive Coordinator Gary Dunn. "We feel good about our running backs with three individuals who have been starters returning at the three spots." Filling the gaps at linebacker to replace Brett Mazzaro and Andrew Sturzenbecker, at the safety spots to replace Bryan Gray and Jordan Shafer and at defensive end for Aaron Diaz will be the prime challenges on defense. In addition to the returning starters, linemen Caleb Meenach (Sr. Catlettsburg, Ky.) and Ryan Messer (Sr., Bellbrook, Ohio) have experience. Josh Ballard (So., Springboro, Ohio) and Anthony Kamer (Jr., Florence, Ky.) saw extensive action at linebacker in 2007. Josh Harris (Jr., Dayton, Ohio), Cameron Armstrong (So., Marietta, Ga.) and Derek Harkness (So., Acworth, Ga.) are proven defensive backs. "We've got to replace two outstanding linebackers and fill voids in the secondary and at defensive end," said Eagle Defensive Coordinator John Gilliam. "You always need to find depth. But, we are confident that we have a talented group of individuals to battle for the open spots." The Eagle defense won the Football Championship Subdivision national statistical championship for rushing defense in 2007. Hyland won the individual national statistical championship for interceptions per game. The special team corps of kicker/punter Mason Webb (Sr., Hamilton, Ohio), long-snapper Meenach, holder Hyland, punt returner Feldman and kick returners Fitzpatrick and Hudson all return.

- 2008 Morehead State Schedule Features Eight PFL Contests and Renewal of Eastern Kentucky Rivalry
MSU's six home games are against Southern Virginia (Aug. 30), St. Francis (Sept. 27), Davidson (Oct. 4), Jacksonville (Homecoming, Oct. 18), Valparaiso (Nov. 1) and Campbell (Nov. 22). Campbell is in its first season in the PFL. Road games will be played at Robert Morris (Sept. 6), Eastern Kentucky (Sept. 13), San Diego (Oct. 11), Butler (Oct. 25), Drake (Nov. 8) and Dayton (Nov. 15). "We believe our 2008 schedule is one of the strongest, most exciting that we have had in several years," said MSU Athletic Director Brian Hutchinson. "I'm sure our fans will be especially excited with the fact that we are playing Eastern Kentucky again in football. We have six home games, four against PFL opponents including our inaugural game with new conference member Campbell." - Marist Becomes 10th Member of the Pioneer Football League
Marist is currently a member of the non-scholarship Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and has three conference titles to its credit, including back-to-back co-championships in 2006 and 2007. The Red Foxes, which began play in the NCAA's Football Championship Subdivision in 1993, will join the PFL in 2009 as the league's 10th member.
"The Pioneer Football League enthusiastically welcomes Marist as our newest member," said Viverito. "PFL expansion is a positive step toward growing non-scholarship football, within the league and nationally."
In June 2007 the PFL hosted a summit for institutions which sponsor, or have interest in sponsoring, Division I non-scholarship football programs. Since that time, the league has taken a leadership role to foster this brand of football, recognizing it is important to have those that sponsor non-scholarship football to keep it and those considering adding non-scholarship football to add it.
"Marist is a fine institution with a solid athletic program," said MSU Athletic Director Brian Hutchinson. "Its addition will strengthen our brand of football under the PFL umbrella. We look forward to beginning competition with Marist in 2009."
The Pioneer Football League, which recently completed its 15th season, is a non-scholarship NCAA Football Championship Sub-Division conference. The league still retains four of its charter members - Butler University, the University of Dayton, Drake University and Valparaiso University, plus the University of San Diego (joining in 1992) - which were joined in 2001 by four new teams, three of which remain today - Davidson College, Jacksonville University and Morehead State University. The league will expand to nine members in 2008 with the addition of Campbell University.

- Three Football Eagles Named to Sports Network Mid-Major and Independent All-America Team
Hyland (Jr., Woodstock, Ga.) was also named to the 2007 Sports Network Football Championship Subdivision All-America Third Team which includes players from all FCS schools. Hyland is the FCS National Statistical Champion in interceptions per game. In 2007, he had eight interceptions in nine games played. He was also credited with 33 total tackles, and 11 additional pass break-ups. Hyland now holds the MSU records for interceptions in a season (8) and a career (17) and shares the record for interceptions in a game (3). Jennings (Sr., Lakeside Park, Ky.) anchored the Eagle offensive line from his left tackle spot. That line enabled MSU to average 25.2 points, 144.1 rushing yards, 197.1 passing yards and 341.2 yards in total offense last season. Gray (Sr., Savannah, Ga.) was also among the national leaders in interceptions per game with six in 11 games played. He was also credited with 25 total tackles and an additional pass break-up. Like Hyland, he shares the MSU school record for interceptions in a game (3). Since it was established in 2001, Morehead State has had 11 players honored a total of 13 times on the Sports Network's Mid-Major All-America Team.
