Eagles, Lady Eagles Ready For OVC Championships
HOOVER, Ala.---Morehead State men's and women's cross country squads will take part in the 2007 Ohio Valley Conference Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships Saturday, Oct. 27 in Hoover, Ala. at the Spain Park Trail. More... |
The men will start their 8K race at 10 a.m. followed by the women's 5K at 11 a.m. The event is being hosted by Samford University.
Eastern Kentucky is looking to defend both the men's and women's conference championship. Jacob Korir of Eastern Kentucky is going for his fourth consecutive OVC championship. He would be only the second runner to do so in the history of the OVC with the first being Grant Colehour of EKU (1965-68).
Samford's Lauren Blankenship looks to win her third OVC championship after sitting out last year with an injury; if she were to win it would also be the fourth straight year that a runner from Samford has won the women's race.
Since 1996 only two schools have won the men's championship - Eastern Illinois (7) and Eastern Kentucky (4); however, Eastern Kentucky still has won the most overall team titles with 14 and they also have the most individual titles with 19. For MSU, last time out, sophomore Ron Duncan set a new school record as he finished in a time of 24:42.90 during the Pre-Nationals Invitational at Indiana State University. On the women's side, Kim Reiland was 117th to top her team in the Pre-Nationals.

A senior from Decatur, Ind., he has put together a decorated academic career at MSU, winning the Male Academic Student-Athlete of the Year award for the department in 2005-06 and being named an Ohio Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete for 2005-06. He was honored as Mr. Eagle at the MSU athletic awards banquet this year and has been on the MSU Dean's List and the Ohio Valley Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll each year as well. Thieme has also been an extremely active member of the Morehead State Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Student-athletes chosen to the first teams of their respective districts move on the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration. Thieme joins a long list of Eagle student-athletes who have earned all-district status - including softball's Becky King and baseball's Donald Cheney and Nick Nail this year. As of 2006, 22 Morehead State student-athletes have been named CoSIDA Academic All-Americans.
