League-Leading Jacksonville State Powers Past MSU In OVC Baseball Doubleheader

JSU is now 26-18 overall, 16-4 in the OVC. Morehead State fell to 16-28 overall, 6-14 in the league. In the opener, Jacksonville State's Steven Leach had had three hits, four runs scored and six runs batted in. Clay Whittemore had four hits, four runs scored and two RBI. Brian Piazza smacked two home runs among his four hits and had three runs scored and four RBI. Gamecock reliever Brian Booth (6-0) came on in the fifth inning, pitched an inning and two-thirds of shutout baseball, and got the win. Morehead State got home runs from Eric Allen, Drew Lee and March Midden. Allen, Midden and Michael Fear each had two runs batted in. Eagle starter Michael Bottoms (3-3) was the loser. In the nightcap, some familiar names continued their hot hitting. Piazza smacked two more home runs and had four RBI. Whittemore had two round-trippers and three RBI. Leach homered and had four more runs batted in. Daniel Adamson had four hits, including a home run, and four RBI. JSU starter Ben Tootle (8-2) pitched five innings and got the win. Lee homered again for Morehead State. Eagle starter Tyler Bess (2-7) lasted only two innings and took the loss. The teams wrap up their three-game series at 1 p.m. EDT on Sunday.

Baseball Eagles Lose Tough 2-0 Decision at Louisville

Pitching dominated the contest. Winning pitcher Matt Lea (3-0) allowed only one hit and had eight strikeouts in five innings of work. Neil Holland pitched three shutout innings for the Cardinals, and Zack Pitts pitched a scoreless ninth inning to get a save. Morehead State starter Clay Muntz (4-1) lost for the first time this season, allowing only three hits in five innings, but one of those was the homer by Mickits. Tyler Bess pitched two innings of scoreless baseball, and Quentin Morgan and Michael Fahs combined to keep Louisville off the board in the bottom of the eighth inning. MSU's three hits, all singles, belonged to J.D. Ashbrook, Drew Lee and Marc Midden. Lee extended his hitting streak to 12 games. Louisville is now 27-16 overall, while MSU fell to 16-26. The Eagles will play host to Jacksonville State for a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series this weekend (May 3-4). Both Saturday's doubleheader and Sunday's single game are scheduled for 1 p.m. EDT starts.

- Murray State Wins Deciding Game of Weekend Series Over Baseball Eagles
Murray State scored a run in the second, and Morehead State tied it with one in the top of the fifth inning. J.D. Ashbrook singled with one out, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground out by Michael Fear.
The Thoroughbreds went on top with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, taking a 3-1 lead. The Eagles cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the sixth inning when Eric Allen walked, moved to second on a single by Drew Lee and scored on a Marc Midden single.
Morehead State took a 4-3 lead in the top of the eighth inning on RBI singles by Botoms and Andrew Wertz.
Of Murray's four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, three were unearned, and the Thoroughbreds took a 7-4 lead. The Eagles scored once in the ninth inning on an RBI single by Lee and had the bases loaded when Trent Hanna was called out on strikes to end the game.
Morehead State is now 16-25 overall, 6-12 in the Ohio Valley Conference. Murray State is 16-22 overall, 7-10 in the league.
The Eagles play at Louisville at 6 p.m. EDT on Tuesday (April 29).

- Morehead State, Murray State Split OVC Doubleheader on Saturday
Morehead State is now 16-24 overall, 6-11 in the OVC. The Thoroughbreds are 15-22 overall, 6-10 in the league. In the opener, the Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Eric Allen led off with a single. Drew Lee followed with another base hit, and Allen scored on a error by Murray centerfielder Zach Noonan. They extended the lead to 3-0 on a two-run double by Andrew Wertz in the top of the fourth inning, scoring Lee and Michael Bottoms who had singled. The Thoroughbreds rallied to tie the score, 3-3, in the fourth, then took a 5-3 lead in the fifth. Morehead State reclaimed the lead with a four-run eighth inning. Travis Redmon led off with a walk. Allen singled, and Lee doubled in Redmon. Marc Midden was intentionally walked to load the bases. Bottoms hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Allen. Wertz walked to load the bases again. A bases-loaded walk to J.D. Ashbrook that scored Lee gave the Eagles a 6-5 lead. A sacrifice fly by Michael Fear plated Midden and made the score 7-5. The Eagles got an insurance run in the top of the ninth when Bottoms singled in Redmon. Clay Muntz (4-0) relieved Eagle starter Michael Bottoms in the seventh inning, pitched two innings and got the win. Quentin Morgan pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his fifth save. Murray starter Chris Craycraft (3-4) pitched into the eighth inning and was the loser. In the second game, Murray scored twice in the second inning and once in the third to build a 3-0 lead. Morehead State's only run came in the fifth inning when Fear singled, moved to second on a ground out and scored on a Thoroughbred error. Both starting pitchers went the distance. Murray's Daniel Calhoun (4-2) allowed only five hits and an unearned run and was the winner. Eagle Tyler Bess (2-6) allowed seven hits and three runs and took the loss. The two teams are scheduled to wrap up the three-game series with a 2 p.m. EDT (1 p.m. CDT) single game on Sunday (April 27).

Lee had an amazing five games last week, hitting .609 (14-of-23) with seven runs scored, a double, three home runs and 16 runs batted in. The Mt. Sterling, Ky., native (Montgomery County High School) had five multi-hit games and four multi-RBI games. He began the week with three hits and two RBI in a one-run loss at 17th ranked Kentucky. He had two hits and an RBI against Georgetown College. In the first game of the MSU-UT Martin series, he had three hits, including a home run, and four RBI. In game two against the Skyhawks, he had three hits and two RBI. In Sunday's finale against UTM, he added three hits, including two home runs, and seven RBI. He had a grand slam home run and a two-run shot on Sunday. A switch-hitter, Lee homered from both sides of the plate in the weekend series. Lee began the season as the Eagle second baseman, but has been filling in at shortstop for injured senior Nick Nail.
The Eagles play at Cincinnati at 6:30 p.m. EDT on Wednesday (April 23).

- Cincinnati Powers Past Baseball Eagles Wednesday Evening
The Bearcats, who are tied for second place in the Big East Conference, are now 24-15 on the season. MSU fell to 15-23. Cameron Satterwhite had two doubles and a home run and knocked in five runs for Cincinnati. Mike Spina had two home runs and four RBI. Overall, the Bearcats pounded out 18 hits, including eight of the extra base variety. After the UC had gone up 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning, MSU tied the game with two runs in the top of the second frame. Eric Parker doubled in Andrew Wertz, who had led off the inning with a single, and Parke later scored in a single by Travis Redmon. After the Bearcats exploded for the seven runs in the bottom half of the second, the Eagles added their final run in the top of the third. Marc Midden, Michael Bottoms and J.D. Ashbrook all singled, with Midden coming home on Ashbrook's hit. UC starter Kevin Johnson (2-0) went five innings, allowed all three Eagle runs and picked up the win. MSU starter Jake Helvey (1.1) allowed seven runs in an inning and a third and was tagged with the loss. The Eagles travel to Murray State for a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series this weekend. Both Saturday's (April 26) doubleheader and Sunday's single game are scheduled for 1 p.m. CDT (2 p.m. EDT).

- Lee Homers Twice and Leads Baseball Eagles to Series Win Over UT Martin
MSU is now 15-22 overall, 5-10 in the OVC. UTM is 5-30 overall, 2-11 in the league. Lee's grand slam, a blast over the 395-foot mark in the deepest part of the park, gave the Eagles a 7-6 lead in the bottom of the second inning. His second home run was a two-run shot to center field in the eighth. He also picked up an RBI when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fourth inning. The Skyhawks had jumped on top, 6-0, with two runs in the first inning and four more in the second. Miles Hartsfield hit the first of two round-trippers with Scott Gladstone aboard in the first inning. William Blackmon had a two run home run, and Bryce Carden had a two-run single in the second inning. The Eagles scored twice in the fourth inning when Lee was hit by the pitch and on a sacrifice fly by Michael Bottoms to extend their lead to 9-6. They made it 10-6 when J.D. Ashbrook led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a double, moved to third on a single by Eric Parker and scored on a sacrifice fly by Travis Redmon. UT Martin cut the lead to 10-8 with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Miles Hartsfield hit his second home run, a solo shot, in the seventh. Cody Terry singled in Blackmon in the eight. MSU added three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth frame on Lee's second home run and on an RBI single by Ashbrook scoring Andrew Wertz who had reached on a double. MSU starting pitcher Matt Clark was roughed up for six runs in his two innings of work. But, Clay Muntz (3-0) came out of the bullpen to pitch four innings of two-hit, one-run baseball to get the win. Quentin Morgan pitched hitless, scoreless baseball in the final two innings to earn his fourth save of the season.
Skyhawk starter Ryan Lantz (1-7) allowed nine runs in three-plus innings and was tagged with the loss. In addition to Lee's offensive prowess for the Eagles, Wertz had three hits, two of them doubles, Ashbrook had four hits in five at bats with two RBI and Redmon had two hits in three at bats with two RBI. Miles Hartsfield knocked in three runs for UTM, and Carden and Blackmon had two RBI each. Morehead State travels to Cincinnati for a 6:30 p.m. EDT game on Wednesday (April 23) at Marge Schott Stadium.
